Streamline your shopping experience with AI-powered shopping carts that accelerate your grocery journey
Wegmans, the popular grocery chain known for quality products and great customer service, has taken a significant step towards enhancing the shopping experience by launching a pilot program for Instacart's AI-powered Caper Carts at its Dewitt store in Syracuse, New York.
These smart carts, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), are designed to make shopping more convenient and efficient. Caper Carts automatically recognize items placed inside using a combination of cameras, sensors, digital scales, and NVIDIA Jetson hardware, allowing customers to track their spending, bag items as they shop, and check out seamlessly without scanning or standing in line.
Customers can also log into their Wegmans Shoppers Club account directly on the cart's digital interactive screen for a personalized shopping experience. The screens also display real-time spending, personalized offers, and product recommendations.
The pilot program is part of Wegmans' ongoing efforts to test and evolve checkout technology company-wide. The company is simultaneously testing smart carts from two providers across four stores in Upstate New York, including locations in Rochester and Buffalo. However, as of now, only the Dewitt store features Instacart’s Caper Carts.
The built-in security measures in Caper Carts, such as AI item recognition and weight sensors, help reduce theft and shrinkage. The smart carts are also designed to be durable and withstand heat, cold, rain, and dust.
Regarding future plans, Instacart and Wegmans have not announced definite expansions of Caper Carts beyond this pilot stage. The collaboration between the companies, ongoing since 2017, continues to evolve with additional integrations such as same-day delivery, pickup, EBT SNAP acceptance, and loyalty programs. However, no public update confirms if or when Caper Carts will be added to more Wegmans stores out of the 100+ stores in their network across eight states and Washington, D.C.
Meanwhile, John Catsimatidis, owner of Gristedes Supermarkets, has expressed opposition to NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's proposal for city-run grocery stores. The ongoing debate highlights the importance of private retailers in the grocery sector and their continuous efforts to innovate and improve shopping experiences for customers.
As the pilot program continues, it will be interesting to see how Wegmans customers respond to the AI-powered Caper Carts and whether they become a permanent fixture in Wegmans stores.
