Swiss Army Fortifies Drone Defense with 108M Investment
The Swiss Army is fortifying its defenses against drones. The 'Gruppe Verteidigung' has tasked armasuisse to acquire drone defense systems, slated to commence in the first quarter of 2025. This decision follows an uptick in drone sightings near military exercises and zones.
The army's response comes on the heels of a successful field trial last summer. The Federal Office for Equipment, armasuisse, has already secured framework agreements with three suppliers for the procurement of mini-drones, with a budget of up to 108 million francs. These mini-drones will bolster reconnaissance work by providing vital information, aiding in surveillance, and supporting deployment area exploration and training.
Airports in Basel and Geneva are primed for drone sightings, with procedures in place that may involve flight suspensions. Zurich airport has also grappled with drone sightings, resulting in delays or closures of individual flights or sectors.
The Swiss Army is set to bolster its protection against drones using mobile drone defense systems. This investment, with a budget of up to 108 million francs, underscores the army's commitment to tackling the escalating threat of unauthorized drone activity near military areas and exercises.
