Swiss Gambling Authority Probes FIFA's Blockchain World Cup Tokens

Switzerland's gambling authority, Gespa, has launched an initial investigation into FIFA's blockchain-based 'Right-to-Buy' (RTB) tokens for the 2026 World Cup. The probe highlights growing scrutiny of blockchain-based fan engagement and digital ticketing in sports.

Gespa is examining whether RTB tokens, which allow holders to purchase tickets at face value if their chosen team qualifies, could be considered gambling. Prices for these tokens range from $299 to $999, depending on team odds. Gespa, the regulator overseeing lotteries and betting in Switzerland, has the power to enforce compliance on Swiss companies, block foreign online platforms, and must notify authorities if violations are found. This preliminary investigation is the first step in determining whether these tokens violate Swiss gambling laws. Further measures will be taken based on the investigation's outcome.

Gespa's probe into FIFA's RTB tokens underscores the increasing attention on blockchain-based fan engagement initiatives in sports. The Swiss authority's involvement signals a potential shift in the regulation of digital ticketing and fan experiences.
