Tesla Deploys V4 Superchargers in China
Tesla has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) charging landscape with the launch of its V4 Superchargers in China. The new charging stations, currently being produced at Tesla's Shanghai factory, offer a host of key features designed to enhance the charging experience for EV drivers.
The V4 Superchargers boast a significantly higher power output, capable of delivering up to 500 kW. This is double the peak output of the previous V3 Superchargers, though currently limited to 325 kW until accompanying V4 cabinets are installed in the US. The increased power output translates to faster charging times, reducing the time EV owners spend waiting to recharge.
One of the standout aspects of the V4 Superchargers is their compatibility with a broader range of EVs. They come equipped with longer cables and CCS connectors, making them physically compatible with non-Tesla EVs from various manufacturers. This move towards universality aims to promote a more integrated EV charging ecosystem in the region.
The V4 chargers also feature built-in payment terminals, enabling seamless access without the need for a Tesla app or adapter. This user-friendly feature enhances convenience for all EV drivers, regardless of the brand of their vehicle.
In addition to improved user experience, the V4 Superchargers offer better cable management and future-proof scalability for higher voltages and charging speeds. The initial rollout includes stations in major regions such as Shanghai, Chongqing, Gansu, and Zhejiang, with plans to expand further in Beijing, Guangdong, and beyond.
The V4 Supercharger network in China is open to non-Tesla vehicles, including domestic giants like BYD and international brands such as Ford and GM. This shift from Tesla's previous more exclusive network aims to reduce range anxiety for all EV users and to compete with the growing domestic infrastructure.
This development marks a significant milestone in the expansion of Tesla's global charging infrastructure. China, the world's largest EV market, saw 11.2 million new EV registrations in 2024 alone. The faster deployment of V4 Superchargers across China is expected to help alleviate range anxiety among potential EV buyers by providing more reliable, high-speed charging options.
Tesla's global Supercharger network has surpassed 70,000 stalls, with the V4 Superchargers set to play a key role in the company's ongoing efforts to build a sustainable and accessible EV charging infrastructure. The first of these cabinets are expected to be installed in the United States this year, further expanding Tesla's global reach.
