Tesla reaches global milestone of selling 3 million Model 3 vehicles.
Tesla's Model 3: Seven Years of Success and Evolution
The Tesla Model 3, launched in 2017, has been a game-changer in the electric vehicle (EV) market. With over three million units sold worldwide, it remains one of the most popular full-electric vehicles and Tesla's bestseller.
At approximately 4.7 meters long, the Model 3 is compact yet powerful. It has been the world's best-selling electric vehicle for a period and continues to lead the sedan class, being the best-selling electric car in this category for seven consecutive years.
The Model 3's performance is impressive. Its sport version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in as little as 3.1 seconds, while the top speed reaches up to 262 km/h. All versions available in Germany come equipped with all-wheel drive.
In September 2023, the Model 3 underwent a major update, focusing on design, comfort, and an upgraded interior. The updated lineup includes several variants, each offering a unique blend of performance and affordability.
The Performance Model, for instance, features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 453 bhp, achieving 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 163 mph. The entry-level rear-wheel-drive Model 3 has approximately 245 bhp, with a range of up to 323 miles, 125 mph top speed, and a 0-60 mph time around 5.8 seconds.
Tesla's Model 3 complements the existing lineup of the luxury sedan Model S and the large SUV Model X. There are currently four versions of the Model 3 available in Germany, with prices starting at 39,990 euros for the rear-wheel-drive model.
While there have been rumours of a more affordable version of the Model 3 serving as the basis for a new, lower-cost electric vehicle from Tesla, no official release or detailed specifications for such a vehicle were available as of September 2023.
The Model 3 has been praised for its reliability, with Tesla Vice President for China, Grace Tao, describing it as a "proven and reliable car" that has consistently performed well.
In the EV market, the Model 3 continues to be a trailblazer, demonstrating Tesla's commitment to innovation, performance, and affordability. As of today, Tesla's bestseller is the mid-size SUV Model Y, which was launched in 2020. However, with the Model 3's ongoing success and the promise of future updates and potential new models, it remains a significant player in Tesla's lineup and the wider EV market.
