The vehicle, which has been in use on a trial basis since the beginning of the year, is part of a larger campaign to sensitize the people of Mainz to the topic of wastewater.
The name "Mainz Darknet Inspector" was chosen deliberately to draw attention and spark curiosity. The decision to acquire its own vehicle was made by the Mainz Economic Enterprise to act faster and more flexibly in maintaining the city's canals. The team operating the Darknet Inspector is specially assembled and trained to work with its cutting-edge camera technology.
The Darknet Inspector is tasked with inspecting the condition of the canals and looking for any potential damage. When a canal damage is suspected, the vehicle is deployed to check the area. The team's constant duty is due to the extensive length of the canal network they are inspecting, which is equivalent to the distance from Mainz to Genoa.
Previously, external companies were hired for such tasks. However, the Mainz Economic Enterprise decided to take matters into its own hands, aiming to streamline the process and ensure a more consistent approach to canal maintenance.
The Darknet Inspector's role extends beyond mere inspection. Many items still end up in the toilet and thus in the canal where they do not belong. The vehicle, with its advanced camera technology, helps in identifying such items and aiding in their removal.

Ralf Weber, the department head responsible for the Mainz wastewater collection, supports the decision for faster action. Jeanette Wetterling, CEO of the Mainz Economic Enterprise, explains the decision to acquire the vehicle, stating, "We want to take a proactive approach to maintaining our city's canals and ensuring they remain clean and functional for all residents."
