Unleashing Romania's Top Brands: Brand Finance Romania 50 Report

Step aside, old-timers! New economy brands are taking the spotlight in Romania, as revealed in a new report by Brand Finance.

Dacia, the well-known car manufacturer, retains the crown as the most valuable Romanian brand, despite a minor 5% decrease in brand value, with a value of EUR 1.1 billion. eMAG, an electronics and goods marketplace, takes the second spot, recovering after two years of decline with an 8% increase in brand value, reaching EUR 893 million. Banca Transilvania stays put in third place, boasting a 34% increase in brand value, reaching EUR 856 million.

Digi, a telecommunications company, and Dedeman, a DIY chain store, round out the top 5, with brand values of EUR 574 million and EUR 494 million, respectively. Combined, these top 5 brands contribute to over half of the total value of the top 50 brands.

Banca Transilvania is the undisputed strongest Romanian brand, holding an elite AAA+ rating and maintaining its position among the top ten strongest banking brands globally for the fourth year in a row.

"While Dacia remains the most valuable Romanian brand, it's no longer the old guard that rules the roost. Emerging brands have taken the lead in numbers and total brand value," says Mihai Bogdan, Managing Director of Brand Finance Romania.

Sectoral variances are apparent in the ranking. eMAG and Dedeman are the clear leaders in the retail sector, with a 5% increase in total sector value. Dedeman, wholly owned by Romanian shareholders, registers a slight 2% increase in brand value.

In the pharmaceutical retail sector, Catena and Farmacia Tei report double-digit growth, while Help Net experiences a decline in brand value. In stark contrast, the overall Romanian economy, with a modest GDP growth of only 0.9%, the collective value of the 50 most valuable Romanian brands increased by 4.8%, reaching EUR 7.3 billion.

This year, the ranking saw a wave of dynamism, with four new brands entering the lower half: Asirom at 38th place, Erbașu at 42nd, ZUZU at 48th, and Kober at 49th. This marked the departure of Agricover, ALRO, DERO, and Mobexpert from the list.

New brands, representing brands created and developed by entrepreneurs and private companies over the last 35 years, account for over 72% by number of brands and 62% of the total brand value in the ranking of the 50 most valuable Romanian brands.

Apart from individual brand analysis, the Brand Finance Romania 50 report also takes a closer look at the ten most valuable brand portfolios, considering companies that operate multiple brands on the market. The Farmec cosmetics brand portfolio lost its spot in the top 10, giving way to the MedLife medical services network.
