Toshiba Opens New $70M India Plant, Boosts Power Transformer Capacity
Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems India (TTDI) has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in Rudraram, Telangana. The plant, part of a $70m (JPY 10bn) investment over three years, is set to bolster the company's footprint in India.
The new facility specialises in cold rolled grain-oriented steel (CRGO) core processing solutions, with an annual capacity of 12,000 tons. It also includes a dedicated surge arrester production line, capable of producing 80,000 units annually. TTDI has begun construction on a new extra-high-voltage (EHV) power transformer manufacturing line, which upon completion, will increase the company's overall power transformer production capacity to 42,000 MVA per annum.
TTDI's expansion is part of an investment strategy outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Government of Telangana in April 2025. Hiroshi Furuta, chairman and managing director of TTDI, stated that these investments will strengthen Toshiba's manufacturing capabilities in India. The new lines aim to accelerate manufacturing, improve operational efficiency, and deliver high-quality, sustainable energy news solutions. Financing for the EHV power transformer factory is provided by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), with completion expected by 2026.
TTDI's new Rudraram facility, with its CRGO core processing solutions and surge arrester production lines, is a significant addition to the company's Indian operations. The upcoming EHV power transformer line will further boost production capacity, solidifying TTDI's commitment to India's energy news infrastructure.
