Toyota's Woven City Set to Open in September 2025

Toyota Motor Corp. is set to launch its experimental city, the Woven City, on September 25, 2025. The city will occupy a 47,000-square-meter section of the site in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan.

Initially, the Woven City will accommodate around 360 residents, primarily Toyota Group employees and their families. However, the project site will eventually expand to about 700,000 square meters to accommodate around 2,000 residents in total.

Toyota positions the Woven City as a testing ground for advanced mobility-related technologies and services. As of early August 2025, the company has announced the addition of 12 new companies, termed "Inventors", joining the project. These participants include Toyota Group companies, startups, enterprises, entrepreneurs, and researchers who collaborate to develop new mobility technologies and living solutions within Woven City.

The construction for Phase 1 of the Woven City was completed by October 2024, with final preparations continuing into 2025 ahead of the September launch. General visitors will be allowed from fiscal 2026 or later, indicating a gradual opening beyond initial resident occupations.

The Woven City project is not limited to automotive companies. Among the 19 Inventors, there are companies involved in rocket development, contributing to the city's diverse and innovative environment.

In summary, the Woven City Phase 1 officially opens in late September 2025 with 360 residents and 19 inventor companies involved, with plans for significant expansion and broader access beginning in 2026 and beyond. This ambitious project promises to be a hub for advanced technology and innovation in the field of mobility and urban living.

The Woven City project will serve as a testing ground for various industries, including automotive, technology, and transportation, with 19 inventor companies contributing to its development. These companies extend beyond the automotive sector, with those involved in rocket development adding to the city's diverse and innovative environment.

In the field of finance and technology, 12 new companies, termed "Inventors," have joined the Woven City project, collaborating with Toyota Group entities to develop mobility technologies and living solutions within the city.
