Transparent Lorde CD tested across seven disc players, functioning in any?

==================================================================

Lorde's latest album, Virgin, made headlines when it was released on a fully transparent CD. However, some fans have encountered playback issues with this unique disc.

According to Lorde's official site and shop listings, the transparent CD is recyclable. It behaves like a regular CD, with data that can be read, as demonstrated by its playback on various devices. The Marantz CD6007, an external drive, a Panasonic Blu-ray player, and a Technics deck intermittently played the CD, among others.

However, some CD players have struggled to read the disc. The issue lies in the disc's reflective layer, which is very thin and semi-transparent, reducing its reflectivity. This compromises the standard reflection needed for laser reading, causing playback problems or failure in some cases.

Particularly, older or more sensitive CD players have faced issues with the transparent disc. For instance, the Technics SL-DV170 DVD/CD changer with a tray-loading mechanism played the CD intermittently, only succeeding when the CD was rotated so that the copyright lettering was positioned on the left side when placed on the tray.

On the other hand, some modern CD players, like the budget Marantz CD6007 and the Panasonic DMP-BDT180 Blu-ray player, have played the transparent disc without any issues. The Panasonic player, however, didn't display the track names on screen.

A Reddit user (Romando1) reported that the Lorde CD could not be read on several devices, including the Sony MXD-D3, Acurus ACD-11, McIntosh MVP 831, and a Marantz CD6007. Interestingly, the CD was played successfully on a PlayStation, although the playback details were not detailed in the article.

It's worth noting that the clear Lorde CD has a fully clear and see-through structure, with a copyright text at the edge of it as the only way to tell which is the right side up. There's also an ever-so-slightly grey-ish shade when holding the CD at an angle.

As new CD players arrive, they will be tested to see if they can play the transparent Lorde CD without any issues. The CD is still available to buy in physical and online shops, but Lorde and her record label Universal Music Group have yet to address the playback issues.

In the meantime, fans with older or sensitive CD players may want to consider alternative ways to enjoy Lorde's Virgin album, such as streaming or downloading the music digitally.
