Trump Attracts Generation Z with Promise of Preserving TikTok Access

Ex-president advocates for the persistence of the social video platform, primarily due to the potential pain it inflicts on Mark Zuckerberg.

Trump Attracts Generation Z with Promise of Preserving TikTok Access

In a surprising twist, ol' Donny drops hints that he's got a soft spot for TikTok, and no, it's not because he's found a new dance craze to mimic. The shift in Trump's stance might be explained by the fact that a significant supporter of the app happens to be a big-time donor in his pocket. With his eyes set on the younger vote, and the platform turning into a pro-Trump hub, this seems like a solid move to boost his image.

In a chin-wag with Bloomberg Businessweek, Trump declared his intentions to greenlight TikTok, rather than dealing another blow to the social video platform he'd attempted to banish during his term. He reasoned that he didn't wish to gift his new favorite punching bag, Meta CEO Zuckerberg, a victory by giving him any more room to dominate the social media scene.

"You got a choice now: TikTok or Facebook-Instagram, confusing, right? I don't wanna be the guy that gives Zuck more power, so here's to TikTok!" Trump joked in a June interview that was published this week.

Trump's echoing sentiments of support for TikTok emerged in March, three months after he'd spent his days trying to crush the app underfoot. Using an executive order in 2020, he attempted to veto TikTok's existence, but alas, the courts weren't ready to dance to his tune.

President Biden, on the other hand, apparently has the ban-hammer ready. In April, he signed a law calling for the divestment of TikTok, meaning its Chinese owner, Bytedance, would either have to sell the app to a U.S.-based entity or kiss the digital world of the U.S. goodbye. The deadline for divestment is set for January 19, 2025, just a day before a new president assumes the reins of the Oval Office. TikTok has reportedly challenged the federal government over this ban in May and insists it has no intention of selling the precious platform to another company.

So, while they dance around the issue, the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance. It's a waiting game, folks, and only time will tell if Trump's latest attempt at winning young voters pays off. Keep your fingers crossed, and remember to break it down, don't fake it 'til you make it, and just go with the flow!

  1. In a surprising shift, tech mogul Zuckerberg might find himself facing stiffer competition in the future, as tech giant Trump, in a bid to appeal to younger voters, might opt to support the rising technology platform TikTok, rather than giving Meta more business.
  2. The endorsement of TikTok by Trump, once a critic of the social video app, could signal a tech battle unravelling between two of the most influential figures in the industry by the year 2025.
  3. The tech landscape in 2025 could undergo a significant transformation, with TikTok potentially resisting a forced sale or divestment, as mandated by the current U.S. administration led by President Biden.
  4. As the tech war between TikTok and Meta unfolds, the future of both platforms and their tech empires headed by Trump and Zuckerberg, respectively, remain uncertain till the divestment deadline on January 19, 2025.
