Trump lauds Musk for extensive changes and reductions
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly lauded tech magnate Elon Musk for his role in reducing government costs, calling Musk's efforts "the most far-reaching and transformative government reform program in recent memory." Trump's comments were made during a joint appearance with Musk at the White House.
Trump expressed gratitude to Musk for saving the government billions, instigating severe changes within the bureaucracy, and attracting numerous intellectual minds to Washington as part of his cost-cutting task force. Trump forecasted that the savings accrued by Musk and his team would steadily escalate, as they've been able to curtail wasteful expenditures and terminate fraudulent activities. Trump went on to express his belief that Musk would remain active in the political realm, stating, "He'll be back."
During the Oval Office meeting, Trump mentioned Doge, the cryptocurrency initially created as a joke, in relation to Musk. Musk responded that the team's influence would expand and the Dogecoin initiative would prove stronger in the future. He also granted his willingness to continue advising and aiding the president when needed.
It has been announced that Musk's role as a government advisor has come to an end, effectively concluding his short-term assignment as a "special government employee" after 130 days. Musk's decision to move on from his advisory role was previously disclosed, with the business magnate citing his intention to concentrate more on his companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, as well as his ownership of X, a social media platform.
Reports indicate that Musk had initially aimed to save $2 trillion in costs but has since scaled back his ambition to $1 trillion. Critics have dismissed Musk's claimed $160 billion in savings as an exaggeration, estimating it to be a fraction of the actual amount. Another tech billionaire, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, has publicly accused Musk of causing the future deaths of millions of kids in underprivileged nations. Musk had previously boasted of transforming the U.S. development aid organization USAID into a "woodchipper" during a weekend. The controversy surrounding Musk's politically conservative views and his Washington activities has allegedly deterred some potential Tesla buyers.
