Uber Expands Service Offering to Goods Delivery in Germany

Ride-hailing and food delivery service Uber has announced its entry into the German goods delivery market with the launch of its "Uber Courier" service. The service is now available in nine major cities, including Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart, and Mannheim.

aking advantage of its existing network of delivery partners, Uber Courier will use bicycles or cars for deliveries, depending on the size and weight of the shipment. Each package can weigh up to 20 kilograms, with a maximum combined weight of 60 kilograms and a fit within the trunk of a standard mid-sized car. The service aims to cater to both personal delivery needs and local small businesses looking for quick, efficient delivery options.

According to Uber's Germany Country Manager, Christoph Weigler, the new service is intended to support local small businesses by offering them a simplified and cost-effective delivery solution. By integrating with the Uber app, businesses can offer same-day delivery to their customers without the need for their own delivery infrastructure.

Uber has faced criticism from the traditional taxi industry since its entry into the German market eleven years ago. Despite this, the company has managed to partner with around 20% of all taxis in cities like Berlin and over 4,000 taxi drivers across Germany.

The expansion of Uber Courier in Germany taps into a growing demand for quick, on-demand intra-city deliveries for both personal items and local business needs. The service represents a strategic expansion into the local courier market for Uber, as it looks to build a stronger presence in the ride-sharing, food delivery, and now, goods delivery markets.

In this expansion, Uber leverages its existing network in the German market, not just for ride-hailing and food delivery, but also for goods delivery through their new service, Uber Courier. This technological integration aims to cater to the growing demand for efficient and quick deliveries, not only for personal items but also for local small businesses.
