UK-Japan Strengthen Economic Ties with New Industrial Strategy Partnership

The UK and Japan have bolstered their economic ties with the formalisation of the UK-Japan Industrial Strategy Partnership. This significant move covers a broad range of sectors, including Advanced Manufacturing, Automotive, Clean Energy, Life Sciences, Quantum, and Cyber.

The partnership's scope is extensive and promising. In the Cyber sector, the two nations will delve deeper into exchanges on cyber skills development and public-private partnerships. This follows a recent conference where the United States and the United Kingdom signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation on quantum technology development. This MOU focuses on strategic science and technology areas such as quantum algorithms, quantum sensors, and cybersecurity.

The partnership also extends to trade digitalisation, digital technologies, space, defence, and creative industries. Regular dialogues have been established to facilitate progress and growth. A Japan-UK Automotive Dialogue will support sector growth, while a UK-Japan Quantum Memorandum of Cooperation will drive sector growth and build commercial partnerships.

In the Life Sciences sector, trade missions and visits are committed to enhancing research and development and commercial collaboration. The partnership aims to sustain collaboration and support investment in each other's economies, with a first tranche of activities already announced.

The UK-Japan Industrial Strategy Partnership is set to boost bilateral trade and investment. With a focus on clean energy, including offshore wind and nuclear, the partnership aims to reduce emissions and ensure energy security. As the partnership progresses, the next UK-Japan Strategic Economic Policy and Trade Dialogue will assess achievements and identify the second tranche of activity, further solidifying the robust economic relationship between the UK and Japan.
