In the face of ongoing conflict, Ukrainian telecoms company Kyivstar has announced a groundbreaking partnership with SpaceX to improve communication resilience for its subscribers. This partnership, a first for Europe, will see Kyivstar offer direct-to-cell satellite connectivity using SpaceX's Starlink constellation.

The collaboration comes at a crucial time, as the Russian invasion in February 2022 continues to cause daily bombardment, blackouts, and service interruptions in Ukraine. The Russian threats extend beyond ground attacks, with Ukrainians facing continued threats from Russian drones and missiles.

Kyivstar has taken significant steps to enhance connectivity for its subscribers since the conflict began. Measures include making calls within the network free of charge, extending payment deadlines, providing free basic internet, and powering free wireless networks in bomb shelters.

SpaceX activated Starlink in Ukraine shortly after the invasion, providing thousands of terminals and months of funded service to the country. This initial phase will see Kyivstar open up text communications for customers via over-the-top (OTT) messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal, with this feature set to be in place by the end of this year.

The latest effort is expected to bring more than just emergency communication benefits. According to Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov, broadband Internet and voice connections for mobile customers via Starlink will be possible in 2024. Future plans for Kyivstar include extending broadband internet connectivity to mobile customers via Starlink, with this service expected to be available from Q2 2026.

The partnership is expected to significantly improve the convenience and safety of communication for Ukrainians beyond just emergency situations. Moreover, the enhanced resilience of KyivStar's network, allowing it to operate during blackouts and service interruptions, will be a significant advantage.

It's worth noting that the Ukrainian government and military have a long history of working with SpaceX. This partnership is another testament to the ongoing efforts to enhance communication capabilities in the face of ongoing conflict.

T-Mobile has also announced plans to launch a data service using the Starlink constellation this October, allowing customers to send SMS, MMS, and short audio clips without a mobile data or Wi-Fi connection (as long as they're within view of one of the satellites).

This development underscores the essential role of technology in maintaining communication during times of crisis and the ongoing commitment of companies like SpaceX and Kyivstar to support Ukraine in its time of need.
