Uncovered in Ukraine: Debut of a Chinese Drone

In a significant development, Ukrainian intelligence agencies have discovered and analyzed a new Russian drone made entirely of Chinese parts, marking the first time Russia has deployed a weapon system composed 100% of Chinese-origin components.

The drone, identified as CBTS.611000, is primarily a decoy used to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses but can also carry a warhead weighing up to 15 kilograms, indicating an offensive capability beyond mere distraction. All components and onboard systems, such as flight controllers with autopilot, navigation modules, antennas, airspeed sensors, and Pitot tubes, are identified as coming from Chinese manufacturers.

Nearly half of the components in one of the seized drones were made by CUAV Technology, a Chinese company specializing in UAV system modules. Additional Chinese-made equipment includes data transmission modules analogous to Australian technology, enabling long-distance drone communication and reconnaissance enhancements.

This finding contradicts China's official stance, as Beijing has repeatedly denied providing lethal aid to either side in the Ukraine conflict. However, the deployment of these drones shows growing Chinese support in Moscow's war efforts.

This discovery further underscores the cooperation between Beijing and Moscow. The use of CUAV Technology components in these drones could potentially violate the company's announced export restrictions, as in 2022, CUAV Technology announced it would impose export restrictions on its products to Russia and Ukraine to prevent their use in military purposes.

The Russian decoy drone is a new type not previously seen in the Ukraine war. The use of this drone could indicate a shift in China's stance towards Russia's involvement in the Ukraine war.
