Unveiled in New Zealand: The Entirety of the New Toyota RAV4, Including the GR Sport PHEV Version
Toyota has announced the introduction of the RAV4 GR Sport Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) to the New Zealand market, marking a significant expansion for the Kiwi lineup. The eagerly anticipated sixth-generation RAV4 SUV, with its full exterior and interior redesign, is set to arrive in the first half of 2026.
The RAV4, first introduced in 1994, has become an essential model for Toyota, loved in 180 countries and regions worldwide. In New Zealand, the RAV4 holds the title of the top-selling new vehicle of any kind. The current model, launched in 2019, has seen numerous updates, including the recent diversification of the model range with distinct visual and dynamic characters for each version. Now, the RAV4 GR Sport joins the lineup with a unique look.
The new RAV4 boasts improved cargo capacity, with a spacious 749 litres available for storage. Toyota claims that the lower 40mm-dashed dashboard enhances visibility for the driver, providing a more enjoyable driving experience.
Under the hood, the RAV4 GR Sport PHEV model has undergone substantial upgrades. Toyota aims to offer the most efficient PHEV powertrain in the world, promising up to 150km of electric range. The electric motor's power has increased by 12%, while the PHEV will also feature DC fast charging, allowing a charge to 80% in just half an hour.
The powertrains of the RAV4 are expected to be improved, with a development of the existing 2.5-litre hybrid configuration. The top GR Sport PHEV will deliver a power output of up to "320hp" (239kW).
Toyota NZ will offer both 2WD and AWD versions of the sixth-generation RAV4. The RAV4 PHEV model will also offer vehicle-to-load charging, enabling the car to power external devices.
In terms of performance, the RAV4 GR Sport boasts a wider track, retuned suspension, and lightweight wheels, promising a dynamic driving experience.
Toyota aims to make the RAV4 a versatile companion that fits all lifestyles, whether for urban living or outdoor adventures. The RAV4 has won the Car of the Year People's Choice prize multiple times, a testament to its enduring popularity and appeal.
The development and production of the new 6th-generation RAV4 SUV are handled by Toyota, with manufacturing taking place in three North American plants: Woodstock and Cambridge in Ontario, Canada, and Georgetown in Kentucky, USA.
