Unveiling of ARRI's Ensō Prime Lens Series
In a significant move, ARRI, the renowned Munich-based company known for its high-quality film equipment, has introduced the Enso Prime lens series. This new series is designed for corporate and commercial content creators and owner-operators, delivering small, portable, and versatile lenses that offer exceptional images in various conditions.
The core set of Enso Prime lenses, which will begin shipping in November, includes 18 mm, 24 mm, 32 mm, 47 mm, 75 mm, and 105 mm lenses, as well as the Enso Vintage Elements Kit. The series offers a smooth, balanced native look that can be tuned with Enso Vintage Elements.
The Enso Vintage Elements are interchangeable optics that attach magnetically to the back of Enso lenses. They are designed to create custom looks, with three positive elements of different strengths and three negative elements. The positive elements produce smeary, soft-edged bokeh in the background and Petzval-like image swirl at the corners of the frame. Conversely, the negative elements have the opposite effect, making out-of-focus background highlights have diffuse centers and bright outlines that overlap to create an edgier, more intrusive feel.
The Enso Vintage Elements also offer quick, easy external lens tuning that incrementally shifts the look and feel of images. They feature encoded chips that convey metadata about shifts in focal length, T-stop, and focus to the camera and on-set monitors, as well as post-production. Three retaining rings are also included in the Enso Vintage Elements kit.
The Enso Prime lenses, combining German precision engineering with Japanese optical excellence, also boast several other notable features. For instance, they minimize breathing, ensuring focus racks have no discernible impact on framing. They also feature close focus with a magnification ratio of 1:4 on most focal lengths.
Moreover, the lenses offer stunning bokeh and falloff, rounding out their emotive focus characteristics. Gear rings are in the same position on all 14 Enso focal lengths, most of which are T2.1 with a 95-mm front diameter.
Images produced by Enso Vintage Elements are sharper in the center but with a stronger detuned effect at the edges of the frame, adding a unique aesthetic to the final product. The Enso Creative Adapter, included in the Enso Vintage Elements kit, further enhances this versatility, allowing creators to craft custom looks.
In summary, the Enso Prime lens series is a significant addition to ARRI's portfolio, offering a balance of precision, versatility, and creative control to content creators. With its unique features and customisable looks, it is poised to become a favourite among corporate and commercial content creators and owner-operators.
