Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 under evaluation: Priced at 470 Euros, that's the cost for the new Mario Kart device.

With the Switch 2 hitting the market on June 5, gamers are buzzing about Nintendo's latest console upgrade. This successor to the wildly popular Switch is not a revolution, but rather a considerable update, much like jumping from the iPhone 12 to the 15, providing enhancements without entirely breaking new ground.

The original Switch's biggest advantage remains in its adaptability, easily transforming from a handheld to a TV console with the help of a dock. The Joycon controllers now connect via magnets, making multiplayer sessions even easier. Transferring your old Switch to the new one is effortless, with the menu guiding you through a ten-minute migration process in our tests. Most games from the predecessor can be played on the Switch 2, and hardware like the Pro Controller is still compatible.

A slew of improvements has been implemented to boost the console's tech prowess. The Switch 2 sports a screen of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full-HD), capable of achieving a 4K resolution in TV mode, depending on the game. The frame rate can reach 120 frames per second (FPS), and ray tracing enhances reflections and lighting effects.

Presenting a larger screen warrants larger controllers, a boon for adults who struggled with the smaller format of the predecessor. Speed is on the rise, with quicker load times in games and the eShop no longer lagging thanks to an improved internet connection.

Nintendo seems to have embraced the online age with the Switch 2. A new feature, Gamechat, connects players online and offers a voice chat expandable to a video chat with a separately available USB-C camera. Players must register for Gamechat with a phone number, and while the service is currently free, a paid membership with Nintendo Switch Online will be required starting March 31, 2026 (around 20 euros per year).

Gamechat's voice quality resembles video conferencing tools, with background noise filtered out. A recording of conversations is made for up to 30 days, allowing for reporting if necessary. This new feature offers an immersive gaming experience and fosters a sense of community amongst players.

It's essential to remember that the Switch 2, while impressive, falls short in terms of hardware power compared to competitors. Another game like "Cyberpunk 2077" might look good but fall far short of its quality on other platforms. Nevertheless, it's expected that major AAA titles like the "Call of Duty" series or "EA Sports FC" will be introduced to the Nintendo console in full over its lifespan.

On launch day, "Mario Kart World" emerges as the main attraction among a selection of about 25 launch titles. It preserves the familiar arcade car racing experience, combining it with Mario characters from the old days and newcomers like a penguin and a cow. Multiplayer options cater to both local and online gaming, and casual, accessible fun is its core essence. Innovations like an explorable open world create a sense of immersion, especially in long races or when choosing the next course individually in the versus mode.

Accessibility is where the Switch 2 truly shines. Die-hard fans may rush to buy at launch to immerse themselves in the expanded "Mario Kart World" universe's depth. However, those who already own a Switch 1 won't miss out on much. It's best to wait until the release of upcoming major Nintendo titles like "Donkey Kong Bananza" (July 17) and "Metroid Prime 4 Beyond" (2025) before making a purchase.

Price remains a concern. The Switch 2 is priced at around 470 euros, with "Mario Kart World" priced at 80 euros (digital) and 90 euros (physical). The console's higher price and the release of anticipated games may see a lower cost for patients during the Christmas season.

The enhancements in the Switch 2, such as the Full-HD screen, improved load times, and new voice chat feature, position it well against other gadgets in the technology realm. With the upcoming release of games like "Donkey Kong Bananza" and "Metroid Prime 4 Beyond," the adaptability of the Switch 2, particularly for old Switch owners, becomes even more attractive, making it a worthy investment for many gamers.
