Upgraded Cassette Player offers contemporary amenities such as Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C compatibility, and a rechargeable battery power source.

In a surprising move, Maxell Japan has launched the portable cassette player Maxell MXCP-P100, aiming to capitalise on the resurgence of cassette tapes and provide a modern, high-quality player in a market flooded with low-quality devices.

The MXCP-P100, priced at approximately $90 in Japan, resembles cassette players popular in the 1990s, such as those made by Sony, Aiwa, and Panasonic. However, it boasts modern features like Bluetooth v5.4 and a rechargeable battery that connects to a USB Type-C charger.

A key selling point of the MXCP-P100 is its brass flywheel, which reduces rotational irregularities and ensures high-quality sound. The device measures 122 x 91 x 38mm and weighs just 210g, making it portable and lighter than many modern smartphones.

The MXCP-P100 offers around 7–9 hours of playback depending on connection type, with a 3.5mm headphone jack as a backup for Bluetooth connectivity. It has sold out since its launch, and the current status of future production or restocking is not disclosed.

Maxell's decision to launch a cassette Walkman in 2025 is driven by the notable revival of cassette tapes in recent years, the market gap for high-quality cassette players, and the desire to maintain brand relevance amid changing technology trends.

While Maxell was traditionally known for tape and disc media, this product aligns with its current portfolio of batteries, chargers, and storage devices. The MXCP-P100 aims to attract both nostalgic users and new listeners who want convenience paired with retro audio.

However, no information is provided about TDK's response to Maxell's cassette player launch, and the number of Maxell MXCP-P100 units produced for the initial batch is not disclosed.

In summary, Maxell’s launch of the MXCP-P100 cassette player in 2025 reflects a strategic move to serve the ongoing cassette revival with a premium player that meets modern expectations for wireless connectivity and battery convenience, differentiating itself in a niche but growing market segment.

The MXCP-P100, resembling the cassette players popular in the 90s, also incorporates modern gadgets like Bluetooth technology for wireless connectivity. In comparison to many smartphones, the portable MXCP-P100, with its sleek design and lightweight build, offers a retro twist to today's technology-driven audio devices.
