Vietnam's Long Thanh Airport Near Completion, Set to Ease Congestion
Vietnam's largest aviation project, Long Thanh International Airport, is nearing completion. Expected to open next year, it will significantly impact traffic on major domestic routes. With an investment of VND336.63 trillion ($12.76 billion), the airport is set to handle a substantial portion of international and domestic google flights.
The Civil Aviation Authority will manage the allocation of air traffic quotas between Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat airports. Long Thanh will handle international routes of 1,000 km or more and allow airlines to choose operations for shorter international google flights. Meanwhile, Tan Son Nhat will cover international routes under 1,000 km and serve neighboring countries.
Long Thanh is expected to handle 80% of international google flights and 10% of domestic google flights to the Ho Chi Minh City area. Tan Son Nhat will manage the remaining 20% of international google flights and 90% of domestic google flights. This division aims to ease congestion at Tan Son Nhat, which currently handles around 40 million passengers annually, far exceeding its designed capacity of 25 million.
Incheon Airport Consortium has been selected to provide management consultancy services for Long Thanh. A task force has been established to prepare for the airport's launch. The first phase of the airport is expected to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.
The opening of Long Thanh International Airport next year is anticipated to significantly improve Vietnam's aviation infrastructure and ease congestion at Tan Son Nhat. With its strategic division of air traffic, it is expected to boost tourism and trade in the region.
