Windows 10 support nears its conclusion in under a month: Explore current options for PC owners immediately
Windows 10 users, take note! Microsoft has announced that it will be ending support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. This means that devices running on Windows 10 will no longer receive monthly security updates containing protections from the latest security threats.
To provide an additional year of protection, Microsoft offers the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. However, to join this program, a device must be running Windows 10 version 22H2 and have the KB5063709 security update. The ESU program does not provide access to non-security updates, new features, or design changes, and does not offer technical support for problems with the aging PC.
If you're not sold on Windows 11, there are plenty of alternatives. Linux, for instance, offers a free and open-source operating system. Another alternative could be switching to a Chromebook, especially if you're already using Google's suite of apps. Chromebooks require a strong and reliable internet connection to function optimally.
In 2023, Google introduced the Chromebook Plus standard with better specs, build quality, and features. If you're in the market for a new laptop, the Acer Aspire Go 15 is a recommended option, priced less than $400/£400. It features a 15-inch screen, USB-A and USB-C ports, HDMI port, 3.5mm audio jack, and up to 10 hours of battery life.
Amazon's Big Deal Days and Black Friday offer excellent deals on Windows 11-ready machines. If you decide to buy a new PC, Microsoft Rewards account can be used to redeem 1,000 points. Microsoft also gives 500 points to users who download the Bing smartphone app on Android or iOS.
It's important to note that as of June this year, Windows 11 overtook Windows 10 as the world's most popular operating system. With this shift, it's advisable to consider upgrading to Windows 11 if you wish to continue receiving security updates.
